Most people believe that all power quality problems can be traced to the power coming from the utility. The reality is more complex. The source of a power quality problem can be the utility, but it also can be your neighbor, your facility or even the equipment inside your facility.

Energy savings are experienced through the reduction of high inrush currents from highly cyclical loads, harmonic reduction in ac motors, improved power factor, improved voltage balance, and lower I²R losses due to reduced skin effect and lower current. Reduction in voltage sag and flicker from internal and external sources assist in reduced downtime through better network stability.

There are many causes of power quality problems, voltage sags/swells, harmonics, fast impulses or sub-cycle impulses, neutral to ground high frequency noise etc. Some of these occur very frequently and cause problems and others (such as 1 nanosecond or 0.5 nanosecond impulses) either occur very rarely or cause problems rarely.
